The North West Animal Rescue charity was formed in 1995 and its constitutional aims are to prevent cruelty to rescue animals in the North West and relieve the suffering and distress of all animals in need of care and attention, and to arrange for the provision of good homes for them around Cumbria in the North West.

Our work covers the Eden Valley areas of Penrith, Appleby, and Alston. No rescue animals in our care are put to sleep, unless this is recommended by a qualified Cumbria Veterinary surgeon. While a rescue animal is in our care, we pay for veterinary bills for annual vaccinations, neutering and any treatment required.

The scale of our work is enormous; annually we care for an average of 400 cats, 150 dogs, not to mention many hedgehogs, wild birds, rabbits, hamsters and any other animal which comes our way!

Having only two part time employees, we rely heavily on the work of volunteers, both in fundraising and in the caring for the rescue animals in the North West.
